Tunisia: Clashes between the army and terrorists in the Kef mountains
An army unit clashed with terrorists around 19h30 on Saturday July 2 in the area of Zerzoura located in the Kef mountains of Jebel Ouergha. The incident occurred during ongoing combing and search operations to track down terrorists in the region close to the Tunisian-Algerian border. At least one terrorist have been wounded in the clashes with traces of blood on several places. An ammunition magazine for a Kalashnikov assault rifle and 22 ammunition cartridges of caliber 7.62mm were also seized. The magazine seized appears to have been hit during the clashes as shown on the photo. The military operations in the area to track down the terrorists are still ongoing. Previous reports speak of a group of 15 terrorists that possibly have infiltrated Tunisian territory by jumping the border with Algeria. Aerial reconnaissance have patrolled the areas of Jebel Ouergha and Jebel Touiref and warplanes have also carried out airstrikes, with ground forces combing the areas of Oued Mliz in Jendouba governorate bordering Kef and Touiref, Jebel Ouergha and Sakiet Sidi Youssef. The hightened terrorist threat level is due to fears that terrorists plan to carry out attacks during the month of Ramadan which soon ends with Eid al-Fitr celebrations beginning on July 7, but also due to reports of terrorist movements in Tunisia’s western and northwestern regions. There is hightened security and vigilance on the Tunisian-Algerian in the governorates of Kef and Kasserine, especially along the axis from Kalaat Senen in southern Kef up further north to Ghardimaou in Jendouba.
