Algeria: Suicide attack thwarted – Terrorist wearing explosive belt shot
A terrorist was killed on Wednesday March, 23, shortly after 2300 local time in central Mâatkas, located about thirty kilometers southwest of the city Tizi Ouzou, according to the news outlet ‘TSA – Tous sur l’Algérie’, citing security sources. The terrorist in question was wearing an explosive belt and was heading towards the security headquarters of the Daïra in the locality of Mâatkas. As the terrorist approached by foot about a hundred meters in front of the police building, the police opened fire killing the terrorist before he was able to execute the attack. An attempt like this targeting security infrastructure in the area has not been recorded for almost five years. The last one dates to August 14, 2011, when a suicide bomber executed an SVBIED attack with explosives into the main security center in central Tizi Ouzou, injuring 33 people including 2 Chinese, an attack claimed by Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Accumulating reports and statement published by the Algerian Ministry of National Defense adds additional information to this incident not reported earlier. The perpetrator was also armed with an assault rifle of type ‘Kalashnikov’, a grenade, a pair of binoculars and a quantity of ammunition, objects seized after the attacker was neutralized.
