Algeria: Two terrorists arrested in Boumerdès
Around 5h in the morning on Wednesday, October 26, a unit of the Popular National Army (ANP) managed to arrest two terrorists in the village of Sahel Bouberak, in the commune of Sidi Daoud, Boumerdès Province. An assault rifle of type Kalashnikov, a semi-automatic rifle of type Simonov, a quantity of ammunition, a pair of binoculars, a camera and three mobile phones were also seized following the operation, according to statement by the Ministry of National Defense.
Only weeks ago was a terrorist killed in the nearby area of Baghlia (see map), Djamel Hennab, a senior AQIM member and aide of AQIM’s emir Abdelmalek Droukdel.
The ANP conducts combing and search operations regularly in the Boumerdès Province as in other provinces of the north, with Boumerdès plagued for decades since the civil war by the presence of militants who now conduct a low-level insurgency, Sidi Daoud being a militant stronghold where this latest operation took place. Army units discover shelters, hideouts and caches containing weapons, IEDs, artisanal bombs and other objects on a weekly basis, the typography of the region provides the militants with an advantage of being able to monitor the movements of security forces and relocate depending on these movements, explaining why shelters pop up like mushrooms, and the tracking becoming an almost endless cat and rat game.
